As a believer, it’s ok to swim against the crowd and follow Jesus instead.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. When my friend Melanie moved her family into their new home, she painted the kid’s bathroom upstairs in a fish theme, with schools of fish all going in the same direction. Then Melanie painted in one solitary fish swimming in the opposite direction of all the rest – she wanted it to be a visual reminder for her children to boldly go where no fish had swam before: in other words, it’s important sometimes to not follow your friends! Although we all want to fit in, God calls us to be holy and that will definitely mean swimming against the crowd. I mean, who wants to be the odd fish out, right? No one! But remember, you are not following the crowd; you are following 1 John 2, “Whoever claims to live in him, must walk as Jesus walked.” Sometimes that’ll feel really different – but it’s okay. You may well create a new current!
