A Moment with Joni Eareckson Tada

A Scramble

Episode Summary

Sometimes humiliation is the best way to humility.

Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And many years ago, when I was still learning to trust God in my wheelchair, I signed up to help lead the high school Bible study at our church. I remember the first night I showed up – I was trying so hard to appear normal; you know, with it; not look disabled at all among these kids. Well, as my friend started to push me into the room, my front wheels caught on the threshold of the door. And suddenly, my wheelchair tipped up on its axis and I fell forward with my head between my knees. I felt so humiliated, especially as everyone scrambled to help. But, oh, what a lesson I learned that night. The Bible speaks so clearly about our need for humility, and sometimes God will bring that about through a humiliating circumstance. Yep, even in front of those high schoolers, I learned what God wanted me to see; that I was a needy, helpless person. And sometimes humiliation is the best way to humility.
