Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. U.S. Representative Steven Palazzo, of Mississippi, has introduced the Every Child Is a Blessing Act to combat “wrongful birth” lawsuits and prevent discrimination against children born with disabilities. Wrongful birth cases are based on the grounds that parents would have aborted the pregnancy if they had known their child would be born with a disability. Recently, an Illinois woman whose tubes had been tied, sued her doctor, after giving birth to a daughter with sickle-cell disease. Sadly, most of these cases have resulted in jury awards in the tens of millions of dollars. My point? No child – especially if that child has a significant disability – no child should hear their parents wish that they had never been born; what’s more make a case of it in court. The Bible says that children are a gift from God. And a child with a disability? Well, in God’s eyes, that’s a special gift.
