Episode Transcription

I have such wonderful memories of my dear friend Carolyn who recently passed away from lung cancer. Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and for more than 22 years, she helped me get up every Monday, Friday and Saturday morning. When doctors said there was nothing more they could do, Carolyn moved to Northern California to be with her daughter’s family. Knowing time was short, Ken and I went to visit her – it happened to be the day of our wedding anniversary. And there we sat by Carolyn’s bed, singing hymns, recounting all the many times she has helped me. We talked frankly, yet warmly about dying and heaven. And that day, ours was a sweet goodbye. On the way home, Ken and I reflected that it was the most memorable wedding anniversary ever. And isn't that the way life is. So, like Ecclesiastes 7:2 where it says, “It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting….” And that, friend, is a poignant reminder the next time you visit someone who is dying.
