Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Society is often so quick to judge by what it sees. Dan Li, a Chinese international student, wrote to me about this, saying, “In a street in Beijing there is a man who has no limbs and legs. This man makes a living by using his mouth to write in calligraphy—but we treat him like a beggar instead of an artist. What if that man were given the same respect as you, Joni? He could be our nation’s own version of Joni! But in China, those with disabilities become more disabled because of how society treats them.” Wow, what a great perspective! I mean, Dan Li, this young student, made a right judgment about that disabled man. A lot like John 7:24 where we are told to “Stop judging by mere appearances and make a right judgment.” Oh friend, join me and Dan Li in seeing people the way Jesus sees them. See them rightly: with eyes of mercy, hope, and love.
