I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And growing up, I didn’t know anyone with a disability; and I didn’t care to know about them. Disabilities, as far as I was concerned, happened to other people, not me. Oh sure, I found folks in wheelchairs oddly inspirational, but their reality was far, far distant from my everyday life. All that changed of course with a simple dive in shallow water. And after I broke my neck, and became one of those disabled, I realized what a self-centered snob I had been. Suddenly I saw that people in wheelchairs were just like me, exactly like me – and that’s when I became energized to do something about not only my plight, but theirs, as well. The moral of this story? Proverbs 28 says that to show partiality is not good. Friend, never think that you are above another – especially if they are struggling. Show kindness to the needy as it says elsewhere in Proverbs, and you will be blessed.
