A Moment with Joni Eareckson Tada

Built for the Glory of God

Episode Summary

Whenever you visit an old cathedral, fill it with hymns to remind its arched ceilings that they were built for the glory of God – not for religious rituals.

Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And once when I visited a big cathedral in Europe, a choir was practicing in the front, so I decided to sing along with them. That’s when a church worker came up and went “Shhhh!” – he told me I was being a disturbance. But wasn’t this a place to praise God? I have to admit, the church building began to feel a little too “religious.” And that’s when I thought of Luke 4 where it says, “In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit.” What’s the point of that scripture? Evil spirits feel just as comfortable in churches where the focus is also on rituals and traditions, rather than the vibrant life of the Spirit of Christ. So, should you ever visit an old cathedral, won’t you softly fill it with hymns and remind those arched ceilings that they were built for the glory of God.
