As it says in 1 Peter 3, don’t be concerned about your outward appearance. Ladies, and men, don’t be deceived by what you see in the mirror. Seek a gentle spirit; it’s what’s lovely; and it’s what’s handsome in the eyes of the Lord.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. With a recent pregnancy and some health problems, Ashley has been gaining a lot of weight. She told me, “Joni, I want to be beautiful in God's eyes, but I really struggle with wanting to be beautiful as the world portrays women.” Ashley’s concerns are not just an issue in today’s slim and trendy culture. No, almost 2,000 years ago, the apostle said in 1 Peter 3, “Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. Clothe yourselves instead with the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.” God doesn’t “see you” the way you “see you”—and by no means does Jesus think of you the way the world does. So—ladies, and men, don’t be deceived by what you see in the mirror. Seek a gentle spirit; it’s what’s lovely; and it’s what’s handsome in the eyes of the Lord.
