With Jesus, you will conquer not in spite of your hardships, but through them.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. I love the old King James Bible, but for many years, I could not really understand what Ephesians 4:8 meant. The King James Version says, “When He ascended up on high, He led captivity captive.” I mean, just how did Christ lead captivity captive? Well, listen to what James Stewart, the great Scottish theologian, says. He wrote, “The very triumphs of [Jesus’] foes He used for their defeat. They thought they had God with His back to the wall, pinned and helpless and defeated. They did not know it was God Himself who had dragged them down to that point. He did not conquer in spite of the dark mystery of evil, He conquered through it.” Oh, friend, that is how Christ led captivity captive. And if you feel pinned and helpless and defeated today, don’t be dismayed – you, too, will conquer not in spite of it all, but through it all with Jesus.
