Through God’s discipline, even hardships and setbacks can cultivate Christlike character and spiritual growth.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. You know, there are some who look back on their childhood and they still grumble – even now, years later – they complain about the punishments they received from their parents. But I’m one of those who can look back on spankings? Those times I was sent to my room? And I can see the wisdom of my mom and dad; all of it went far to help rid me of a rebellious spirit and begin to shape in me good character. And I can look back on my broken neck the same way. Maybe at one time I grumbled and complained, but, oh, I can see how God used my diving accident to rid me of a rebellious spirit and help shape the character of Jesus in me. Hebrews 12 says that God disciplines us for our good. And I believe that! So, let’s submit to God’s rod of correction. For when we do, the character of Jesus blossoms within us. And that, friend, is worth any amount of discipline any day.
