Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Recently my husband and I we were reading through the book of Proverbs, when we stopped at the 20th chapter, the 30th verse. It says there, “Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.” Yikes! Sounds a bit disturbing at first, but friend, it’s true. Affliction is a tool God uses to cleanse us from the inside out. Through a trial, God may land a knockout blow to your puffed-up pride. Through a deep disappointment, he may wound your heart. The Lord will go to great lengths to hammer hateful habits out of your character and to purge selfishness from your soul. But not because he is a stern, tight-lipped celestial ogre. No; the Bible goes on to tell us that the Lord “disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.” The wounding is going to hurt, but it will make you more like Jesus – and that, my friend, is worth anyblow or beating.
