Worship is meant to unite everyone in praise – not drown out the voices of God’s people.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And last week I spoke at a mega-church in southern California. When I wheeled into the worship service, the usher was passing out earplugs. I did not know what they were for until the music started. Oh, my goodness, it was so loud, I could feel the vibrations in my chest. Needless to say, I inserted the earplugs. Unfortunately, the plugs not only deadened the sound of guitars and drums; it deadened the voices of everyone around me. And that saddened me more than the ear-splitting volume. Worship is designed by God to be a corporate experience; that is, an experience of the body of Christ together. You and I are intimately linked to our Christian brothers and sisters. And worship is a joining of voices together in praise to our heavenly Father. Little wonder Psalm 34 tells us to “Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt his name together.” So, listen for that this Sunday!
