Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Gordy was diagnosed with autism at a very young age. And for 14 years it seemed as though Gordy was unable to comprehend anything since he had never spoken or shown much emotion. But one day, Gordy’s therapist decided to teach him a new prompting method using a letter board to respond to questions. They discovered Gordy was not only absorbing everything but he had a lot to say. After 14 years of silence, Gordy communicated that he wasn’t looking for pity; He liked who he was. For a 14-year-old with autism, he had a great self-image and all he wanted was to be accepted. Oh friend, the Bible tells us to “accept one another just as Christ accepted you.” It’s what we do all the time at our Joni and Friends Family Retreats where we serve plenty of kids like Gordy.
