Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Dorothy Williams, an elderly missionary, served many years training nurses in Africa. She had her limitations but refused to be discouraged. One day Dorothy stopped a sad-looking young African nurse who was carrying a tray of surgical instruments. The student apologized, “Oh, mum, I am feeling much afraid today,” to which Dorothy said, “Dearie, see these shiny instruments on your tray?” Then she picked one up, “The devil has a sharp instrument too, and it’s called discouragement – it’s sharp because he uses it so often.” The nurse smiled, then went on her way with fresh resolve. Ezra 5 tells us the devil’s strategy is to “discourage us, make us afraid, and frustrate our plans.” But you, you have your own weapon: you’ve got the Word of God. And in order to fight discouragement, you need to sharpen that weapon. So, read your Bible, memorize Scripture, and use it often against your adversary!
