Today, take a hint from Ezra and thank the Lord for His great mercy.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I am so glad I do not get what I deserve. I’m thinking of Ezra 9. With great shame, Ezra prays: “Oh Lord, our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens. Because of our sins, we have been subjected to the sword in captivity, to pillage and humiliation at the hand of foreign kings but now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious. Though we are slaves, God has not forsaken us. He has shown us kindness.” The Israelites were paying a high price for their sin—but they had not gotten all that they deserved. And the same is true for us: though we often reap the consequences of our wrongdoing, we really do deserve far worse. But aren’t you glad that the grace God offers through Jesus isn’t just for a brief moment—it is everlasting. So today, take a hint from Ezra and thank the Lord for His great mercy.
