A Moment with Joni Eareckson Tada

Helpful Companion

Episode Summary

Your weaknesses, not successes, can reveal God’s glory in the most unexpected ways.

Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I know myself too well. Like when I’m sitting in a staff meeting, listening to a coworker sharing an idea, and I know I came up with that brilliant idea first – it’s all I can do to keep from grabbing the credit! Our fallen nature sure does crave self-glory. We want our successes and strengths to be made known, and our failures and weaknesses to be hidden. The Apostle Paul could have been like that, but Jesus wisely gave him “a thorn in the flesh…to torment him.” Paul’s thorn reminded him that it is not human achievement that showcases the glory of God. It is human want, and need, and helplessness. And it’s why I am so grateful to be sitting in a wheelchair during those staff meetings! My disability is my tormenting, but helpful companion; it is my thorn that keeps me from cherishing inflated ideas of my own importance. Consider your thorn today, for I hope you can say the same.
