In times of pain, it’s not empty promises but Jesus’s presence that assures you that you’re never alone.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Recently, when I was at the supermarket waiting in the checkout line, I scanned a few of the magazine covers and I noticed Oprah Winfrey’s glossy photo. Under her smiling face were the words, “You are not alone!” With a big exclamation mark. Sitting in my wheelchair, feeling weary and in pain, her words seemed hollow. Her glamorous magazine cover assuring me that she understood – well, it didn’t come across very sincerely. But I tell you what did. Those words “you are not alone” reminded me of Hebrews 13 where God says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” Oh, friend, when you’re hurting, and when you want to hear the truth from someone who understands suffering – I mean, really understands – it’s Jesus. No glitz or glamour with him; just the one and only one who is genuinely with you in your pain. And with Him, you are never alone.
