If you’re fighting depression today, be on the lookout for someone who is hurting more. And then lift them up in encouragement.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And the other day, Jason asked, “Joni, I’m disabled and I struggle with depression. How do you keep from getting depressed?” Well, I told Jason. I’ve got to be so vigilant, I’ve got to keep my emotions in line because I can let my circumstances get me down sometimes. But I told Jason that when the blues begin to encroach, the best cure is to find someone who is hurting more than I am and minister to them. It’s why I keep on my desk a list of phone numbers of quadriplegics I know. And when I feel down, guess what? I take a deep breath, I pray, and I ask God to help me lift them up! Second Corinthians 1:6 says, “If we’re distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.” Friend, if you are fighting depression today, be on the lookout for someone who is hurting more than you are. Lift them up, and you’ll be lifted, too.
