Joni reflects on Elisabeth Elliott’s belief that the love of the departed continues through prayer and worship in heaven. What a comforting reminder that “love never fails!”
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And recently, I found in my files some old cassette tapes of Elisabeth Elliott teaching. Elisabeth said something that startled me. She stated that she was sure her deceased mother still prayed for her. At first, her comment made me a little uneasy, but then Elisabeth explained, “Since I know that mother talked to Jesus about me all the time while she was here on earth, why should I think she would stop doing this now that she is with him face-to-face?” First Corinthians 13 tells us that “Love never fails.” And if it never fails, then why should we think that Elisabeth’s mother stopped loving her when her spirit went to heaven? To be sure, there are a lot of mysteries surrounding the current state of departed saints, but it’s not a stretch to think that their love for us and for the church is brimming over with wise prayers and wonderful worship of our Savior.
