Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And Kathren is a faithful helper who gets me up in the morning and often travels with me. Recently Kathren’s doctor told her that her blood pressure and sugar levels were too high, so she was going to have to manage her weight better. The doctor said to her, “You know how when you are flying, and the flight attendant says that in an emergency, you need to put on your oxygen mask first, before you assist another person? Well, if you want to keep serving as a caregiver, you have to put your oxygen mask on first. You need to stay healthy to take care of your quadriplegic friend.” Later, Kathren told me that the illustration made her cry. [And when I see her dieting, now I thank her for wearing her oxygen mask]. Proverbs 12 says, “The words of the wise bring healing.” If you are a caregiver, follow your doctor’s advice and ask about resources at joniandfriends.org. It’ll be your oxygen mask.
