Episode Summary

Be ready with pleasant words for those who need a nudge in the right direction.

Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. I was at the mall when I wheeled past a woman offering food samples from a little tray. She said to me, “May I offer you one?” and held it up, at which point I directed my friend to take it and give me a bite. Immediately the woman apologized, “Oh I am so sorry, I did not realize you were, I mean, I didn't know you couldn’t use your hands.” Bless her heart, this woman was horrified, but I told her not to worry. I just smiled and said, “You know next time you see a person with a disability, just say, ‘Do you need any assistance? I’d be happy to help.’” She was so relieved and grateful that I had given her useful language for future encounters. As I wheeled away, I thought of Proverbs 16 where it says, “The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction.” So, today be ready with “pleasant words” today for those who need a nudge in the right direction! Good advice for you from joniandfriends.org.
