Don’t be so fearful of failure that you forget to be fearful of a Holy God. Focus on him and you can never lose.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I do not like to lose. I don’t like to lose at Scrabble; I don’t like to lose an earring. Losing, for me, is not easy. I’ve got these expectations I place on myself, and I have to confess, I don’t like to admit failure even in the area of personal sin. I get into trouble with this attitude. Jerry Bridges says in his book, The Pursuit of Holiness, “We are more concerned about our own victory over sin than we are about the fact that our sins grieve the heart of God. We cannot tolerate failure because we are so success oriented, not because we know our sin is offensive to a Holy Lord.” Ouch! Little wonder we keep repeating the same sins. So join me in not being so fearful of failure when we forget to be fearful of a Holy God. We are not doing this thing called life to please ourselves with our performance; let’s please Jesus. Focus on him and you and I can never lose.
