The next time you cannot seem to pray, open up a hymnal and use the words of a hymn as a prayer.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada, and in the dead of night when I cannot sleep, when at 2:00 a.m. anxious thoughts keep me awake, and I just cannot come up with words for my own prayer, I rely on hymns. I borrow the words of old hymns and I use them as a prayer – like the words of this hymn, “May the mind of Christ, my Savior, Live in me from day to day, by His power and love controlling, all I do and say.” And I’ll quote the rest of the stanzas, as well. Is that a great prayer, or what? And it’s one of the blessings of memorizing the words to songs of praise and worship, and beautiful old hymns. So, the next time you cannot seem to pray, flip open your Scripture chorus book or the hymnal and borrow the words of “May the Mind of Christ, My Savior.” It’s something to sing about, and sleep well tonight, friend, and be at peace.
