Instead of counting sheep, count and reflect on his promises instead – you’ll be sure to fall soundly asleep.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I have to confess: Sometimes my chronic pain hurts so bad it’s almost impossible to sleep. Now I would toss and turn, but I can’t even do that! So, to prevent from getting frustrated, I remember King David’s suggestion to think upon God through the watches of the night. And so, that’s what I do. I reflect on his promises to me where he says, “I will help you. I will strengthen you. I will hold you with my victorious right hand. I will never leave you or forsake you. I will be with you till the end of the age. No good thing will I withhold from you. I will work everything together for your good. I will be a son and a shield to you.” And finally, God’s promise that nothing – not even pain or a bad night’s sleep – can separate from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And you know what? After I repeat these promises a few times, you guessed it: I fall asleep.
