Next time you sing, sing what you mean – and mean what you sing.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and I love to sing. But often, if I know the hymn, I’ll sing by rote. I'll just kind of put myself on automatic and let the music carry me. Sometimes, I get so caught up in the tune or the harmony that I won’t even know what I’m singing. The other Sunday, while harmonizing on the words to a favorite hymn, I stopped and thought, wait a minute, what am I saying? “Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold.” I mean, those are powerful words. And friend, it’s why we should think about what we’re singing. Just like 1 Corinthians 14 says, “I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.” Often, we fail to “sing with our minds,” that is to sing with a conscious and firm conviction of what we’re saying. There are so many rich and powerful worship songs: So, next time you sing, sing what you mean – and mean what you sing.
