Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Despite her muscular dystrophy, little Hailey felt just like any other kid—that is, until she went to kindergarten. Her classmates made her feel like she didn’t fit. And even worse, they left Hailey out of games at recess. But remember that little rule: “Treat others as you would like to be treated?” Well, there was a boy named James in Hailey’s class. And James didn’t like the way the other kids mistreated Hailey, so he started to watch out for her. If someone said an unkind word to Hailey, James spoke up, reminding them how they would feel if they were in Hailey’s position. You know that little rule actually comes from Luke 6, where Jesus says, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” So, speak up for others, especially those with disabilities, and treat them with respect—befriend them—just like James did with Hailey.
