In a world of hostility, it’s always better to give a gentle answer.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and although Kerry is only in her twenties, she has to use a parking placard due to her condition called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Often, she receives suspicious looks as she exits her car. One day a young man approached her and said, “You can walk. So, what are you doing with a handicap placard?” Now, this is where the story takes an unexpected turn. Kerry with a smile, stuck out her hand and replied, “Hi, my name is Kerry. What’s yours?” The guy began fumbling for words, a little taken aback. And Kerry explained, “You know, I’d rather we know each other’s names before I talk to you about my disability.” Lowering his head, he mumbled, “I’m sorry,” and walked away. Proverbs 15:1 says that “A gentle answer turns away wrath.” Something wise to remember, especially in our culture where there is so much anger. Always, always give gentle answers.
