A Moment with Joni Eareckson Tada

Swim or Sink

Episode Summary

Like sharks that keep moving to survive, Christians are called to press forward in their walk with Christ and not remain stagnant.

Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And if you have ever watched Jaws or Shark Week, you’ve probably seen sharks swimming in the ocean with their mouths open. That’s because most sharks have to swim constantly in order to keep oxygen-rich water flowing over their gills—it’s just how they breathe. Not just that, but all sharks have to swim to avoid sinking to the bottom of the water. And it’s a great lesson for us Christians. As my Pastor, Bob Bjerkaas, shared in a recent sermon, sharks teach us that we are to constantly move forward, “press on” as the Apostle Paul puts it in Philippians 3. Friend, we have no time for relishing past accomplishments or standing still or beating ourselves up over past failures. As a Christian, you just can’t remain static in your walk with Christ. You’ve got to move forward, or you will simply suffocate spiritually. You will sink. Remember that today. Take a big bite out of life and live it forward!
