A Moment with Joni Eareckson Tada

The Touch of the Master

Episode Summary

You may be a broken instrument, but when you place yourself in the hands of your Master, you become a beautiful work of his hands.

Episode Transcription

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. It was a delightful evening, and my husband Ken had invited up his friend, Christopher Parkening. Chris is a world-class guitarist, and after dinner, Ken pulled out his old high school guitar. That thing looked old – dust on it, cracks, the strings were fossilized. But Chris took that old guitar from Ken, and without a word, he tightened the strings and launched into “Recuerdos del Alhambra,” a beautiful, classical Spanish guitar piece. And I started crying. I thought, “Wait, that guitar – was this the same thing that used to play just ‘Kumbaya’ and ‘Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore?’” The guitar surprised me because Chris Parkening, a virtuoso of classical guitar, gave it his touch – the touch of a master. And it’s a lesson for us “Kumbaya” people, because when you place yourself in the hands of your Master, you become a beautiful work of his hands. And, oh, how lovely are the works of the Lord! That’s something to celebrate today!
