Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And at Family Retreats, we have activities for everyone. But for years, Tom, one of our adult campers with an intellectual disability, never chose to fully participate. Instead, he would ask Eddy, his volunteer STM, to escort him in a wheelchair to go on countless strolls around the camp—even though Tom could walk on his own. Well, this year something changed. Eddy kept on urging Tom, “Come on, you can do it buddy. You can do this!” It was that simple encouragement that motivated Tom to forget strolling around in a wheelchair on the perimeter and stand up and get involved—even in the talent show! So, friend, if today you are feeling hesitant, be encouraged!
