See why Joni says being as “wise as serpents” is actually the smart thing to do.
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. My daddy was a wrestler who won national championships, and I remember hearing him coach a kid, saying, “never, ever put yourself in a position where your opponent can pin you to the mat.” I’ve never forgotten that, because it’s a great lesson for Christians. Often, we make ourselves easy prey for the adversary, placing ourselves in risky positions where the devil can easily take us down. It’s why the Bible says, “be wise as serpents.” In other words, know the tactics of that old serpent, the devil. Knowing that he’s just waiting for you to put yourself in a risky position, whether it’s fudging the truth, watching something on TV you shouldn’t, or hanging out in the wrong places. Satan will take every opportunity he can find to take you down. It’s why 1 Peter 5 says, “be alert when it comes to the devil.” And my daddy would say the same.
