As you obey and do not disregard God’s commands, guess what? You are a theologian!
Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. And we all want to be illumined by the Holy Spirit, right? We all want to grow in our knowledge of God. Well, J.I. Packer in his book Concise Theology says that the way to benefit fully from the Spirit’s ministry of illumination is by serious Bible study, serious prayer, and serious obedience to whatever truths you’ve been shown in God’s Word already. Martin Luther centuries ago, said the same thing. He said there are three things that make a theologian: oratio; that is, prayer; meditation; that is, thinking in God’s presence about the text, and tentatio; that is, the struggle to be loyal to what God has revealed in the face of pressure to disregard what Scripture says. Hey friend, Martin Luther is talking about you. As you pray and meditate on what you’ve learned in the Bible, and as you obey and do not disregard God's commands, guess what? You are a theologian!
